CBSE reduces syllabus for class 9th to 12th by up to 30% due to Covid

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has reduced its syllabus for classes 9 to 12 by up to 30 per cent for the academic session 2020-21 giving relief to the students whose studies have been disrupted due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

“The revision of syllabi is a measure taken due to the extraordinary situation prevailing in the country and at different parts of the world. Considering the importance of achieving the level of learning, the syllabus has been rationalised to the extent possible up to 30 per cent by retaining the core concepts,” said Union Minister for Human Resource Development Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’.

The CBSE on Tuesday released revised syllabus for classes 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th. Several topics and chapters have been removed from the new syllabus. For example, in the political science class 11th students would not be required to study the topics such as secularism, nationalism and federalism. Similarly, the topic of India’s relations with its neighbours have been removed from the political science syllabus for class 12th.

The changes will be applicable only for the 2020-21 session. According to the union HRD minister the changes made in the syllabi have been finalised by the respective Course Committees with the approval of the Curriculum Committee and Governing Body of the Board.

The Heads of Schools and Teachers have been advised by the Board to ensure that the topics that have been reduced are also explained to the students to the extent required to connect different topics, an official statement released by the Union HRD ministry said.

However the reduced syllabus will not be part of the topics for Internal Assessment and year-end Board Examination. Alternative Academic Calendar and inputs from the NCERT on transacting the curriculum using different strategies shall also be part of the teaching pedagogy in the affiliated schools, it added.

For Elementary Classes – classes 1st to 8th – schools shall follow the Alternative Academic Calendar and Learning Outcomes specified by the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT).
